Inishbofin Ferry publishes return prices only; no single fare is listed. Free Travel Pass holders pay a booking fee of EUR 10 per return (EUR 5 each way) and must carry the pass when boarding, or the normal fare is charged. Student card holders cannot book online: call 095 37228, text 087 180 0586 or email [email protected]. Bicycle prices are for bringing your own bike, not for hire. The FAQ adds a fee for large amounts of luggage beyond the norm, without giving the amount. Tickets are sold online and at the ferry office in Cleggan before the sailing. All fares in euros (EUR).
Inishbofin Ferry runs the passenger boat between the pier at Cleggan, a village a few minutes' drive from Clifden in north Connemara, and Inishbofin, which the company places about 10 km off the coast. The crossing is scheduled at around 30 minutes, and the company names its boat the Island Discovery. A separate cargo ferry carries goods to the island; this page covers the passenger service only.
The winter grid, which the operator starts on 19 October, is not the same every day. Each day opens with a morning boat from the island, followed by a late-morning departure from Cleggan and a second round trip in the afternoon. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays begin earliest and Sundays latest. Fridays add a midday round trip, and on Tuesdays and Fridays the evening boat out of Cleggan leaves much later than on other days. On bank holiday Mondays the first island departure is pushed back. Christmas Day has no sailing, and 26 and 27 December and New Year's Day have a single round trip in the early afternoon. The operator adds that all sailings depend on the weather.
Fares are published for return journeys only: EUR 25 for an adult, EUR 15 for a student, EUR 10 for children aged 6 to 17 and EUR 5 for ages 3 to 5, with under-3s free. Free Travel Pass holders pay a booking fee of EUR 10 for the return trip and must show the pass at the gangway, or they are charged the full fare. Bringing your own bicycle costs EUR 10 return, an e-bike EUR 15 and a bike trailer EUR 10. Students cannot book online and have to call, text or email the office, and unusually large amounts of luggage carry an extra charge.
Tickets can be booked online or bought at the ferry office in Cleggan (Eircode H71 YP11) before the boat leaves. The booking page asks passengers to reach Cleggan at least 30 minutes before sailing, while the FAQ allows 15 minutes outside the high season, so the longer margin is the safer one. Cars stay behind in privately run car parks in the village, at about EUR 4 a day according to the operator. Dogs are allowed on a lead on the outside deck. A wheelchair-accessible gangway leads to the open upper deck; reaching the indoor cabin depends on the height of the tide, so call 095 37228 before you travel.
- Be at the pier in good time; on car ferries vehicles may need to arrive earlier than foot passengers.
- Check the operator's notices on the day — Atlantic wind and swell can cancel or reschedule island sailings.
- Some island operators advise booking ahead in June, July and August, and for groups.
