The Passage East car ferry crosses the River Suir between Passage East in County Waterford and Ballyhack in County Wexford. Passage East Ferry Company has operated it since July 1982 and describes it as a continuous shuttle: there is no booking and no reservation, you simply turn up on either bank and take the next boat. The company puts the crossing at about five minutes once the ferry sets sail.
How often it goes depends on which page you read. The sailing-times page says every 10–15 minutes from either side, with more than 100 crossings a day; the FAQ and the car ferry page say roughly every 15 minutes. The one fixed timetable is for commuters: Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 09:00 the boat leaves Ballyhack every quarter of an hour, after which it returns to the shuttle. Service starts at 07:00 Monday to Saturday and at 09:30 on Sundays and public holidays. The last sailing is at 20:00 from 1 September to 30 June and at 21:00 in July and August. The ferry runs every day except Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day.
The boat takes cars, vans, small minibuses, motorcycles, campervans, cyclists and foot passengers. A car with its passengers costs €10 single or €14 return, a car towing a caravan €13 or €20, and a campervan €14 or €18. Motorcyclists pay €5 single, cyclists €3 and foot passengers €1.50. Return tickets never expire. Regular users can buy multi-trip tickets, including a 12-crossing car ticket for €42 that lasts 14 days from first use.
You can pay online in advance with a card, or on board with cash or card. Online tickets arrive by email and can be shown printed or on a phone; the ticket pages ask drivers to stay with the vehicle until the fare has been collected and to arrive five to ten minutes before departure. Pets may travel if kept on a lead. The company's office answers on 051 382480 or at [email protected].
- Be at the pier in good time; on car ferries vehicles may need to arrive earlier than foot passengers.
- Check the operator's notices on the day — Atlantic wind and swell can cancel or reschedule island sailings.
- Some island operators advise booking ahead in June, July and August, and for groups.
